No Deal for Morneau

Along with the bad news of Mauer's injury, the news also came out today that late last week, talks between the Minnesota Twins and Justin Morneau over a new contract broke off. Morneau was surprised that a deal never got done, and also said that the two sides never really came all that close.

It was originally thought that Morneau would be willing to do a deal similar to the one catch Joe Mauer signed, but that deal never happened. When asked if he was upset about the talks breaking without a contract, Morneau responded, ""Oh, well. I'll just have a good year and we'll try to get something done next year."

Morneau can't become a free agent until after the 2009 season. In February, Morneau agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract for this season. He will be eligible for arbitration until the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons, and after that will be able to become a free agent.
