Spring Training: Games 16 and 17

Winning has become a common thing these days in Fort Myers as the Twins have won five of their last six games. The Twins were able to beat the Orioles on Thursday with more great pitching and a few hits.

Ramon Ortiz pitched well, and allowed a couple of runs, but none were earned. I'll have my observations from the game today below, and I'll throw some observations from yesterday's game right below those. The roster battles have really been heating up lately with both the starting pitching spot and the extra bench spots, so the rest of spring should be fun.

Minor League Camp:
Here is a quick note regarding minor league camp. This is from the Spring Training Blog done by the Pioneer Press.

Minor league spring training games start today, and Joe Nathan and Jesse Crain went to minor league camp to pitch in order to open up innings for younger pitchers at Twins camp.

Gardenhire said Matt Guerrier and Dennys Reyes will go down on Saturday, followed by Pat Neshek and Juan Rincon on Sunday.Nathan threw one inning, striking out three. Crain threw one inning, with two hits, one strikeout and a pickoff.

And here are my observations...

Game 17:
- Ramon Ortiz went four inning today, and although he gave up two runs in the first inning, none were earned. He gave up three hits and also struckout four batters. After the first inning, he retired 10 straight batters.

- Glen Perkins kept the fifth starter battle interesting as he had yet another good outing. Perkins went two innings giving up no hits and striking out three batters.

- The Twins also got good innings og work from Rincon, Neshek, and Choate. They each pitched one scoreless inning as Rincon picked up one strikeout and Neshek picked up two.

- Cuddyer hit his second homerun of the spring in the fourth inning off of Loewen.

- Errors costed Ortiz pitches and also allowed the Orioles to score. Casilla had one error and Watkins had two.

- Some other notable hitters included:
Josh Rabe: 3-3
Justin Morneau: 1-3
Nick Punto: 1-3
Jason Tyner: 1-1

Game 16:
- Silva allowed four doubles in his four innings of work. He also allowed three runs and another hit.

- Slowey pitched two good innings of work. In his two innings, he allowed just one hit while strikingout three batters.

- The Twins had just three hits, but here are the stats:
Josh Rabe: 1-2; Double
Luis Rodriguez: 1-3
Chris Heintz: 1-1; RBI

- Rondell White was robbed of extra bases when he hit a ball down the third baseline. White also left the game after being hit in the left knee, and is currently listed as day-to-day.

The Twins are now 7-9-1 after today's win.
