Twins Cut 2, Lose Another

Yesterday, the Twins cut two more players as they optioned Errol Simonitsch to Class AAA Rochester and lefthander Jose Mijares to Class AA New Britain. Neither of these players had chance of making the team out of spring this year, so we knew it was coming as the Twins want to see more of the major leaguers get more innings.

On Tuesday, the Twins also lost Ken Harvey to knee surgery. All spring it has been his chest that has been bothering him, but the Twins staff found something in his knee so he will have the same surgery that Lew Ford had. This will take him out of any chance he may have had to make the club, but don't be surprised if he is kept around for the Red Wings. Harvey will miss the same time as Ford, 4-6 weeks.

Roster Battles:
Over the last few days, the roster battles have really gotten tight. Luis Rodriguez, Alexi Casilla, and Machado each have chances as infielders with Mathew LeCroy having a chance as a DH\1B. I'd also throw Denard Span in the mix even though his chance is very small.

On the pitching side, Venafro and Durbin have each pitched well over the last few days, and each have good chances of making the team. Ponson and Garza will both pitch on Friday, and as of now I'd day that Garza is the front-runner. You can also say that Perkins and Baker are competing for that fifth starter job as well.

So here is my list of the top candidates for roster spots:

Position Players:
Luis Rodriguez
Alexi Casilla
Matt LeCroy
Denard Span
Alejandro Machado

Pitchers:
Mike Venafro
J.D. Durbin
Scott Baker
Sidney Ponson
Matt Garza
Glen Perkins

Although Span and Casilla both will probably start at AAA, I can't help but hope they can make the roster. They have both played well and have been a lot of fun to watch.

Feel free to leave your players that you think have a good shot and if I think I forgot them, I'll add them to the list.

Game Observations:
Since I didn't get any observations up from yesterday's game against the Cardinals, I'll put both tonight's game and yesterday's game in one post either tonight or tomorrow.
