Game 78: Detroit Tigers
The Twins kicked off their key series with the Tigers tonight with an 11-1 victory. Johan Santana looked great, and the offense got on Verlander early and never looked back. Joe Mauer continued to show off his power, and Guerrier tried to show Tigers manager Jim Leyland why he deserves to be an All-Star (Neshek does as well).
Johan Santana has noticeably gotten better throughout his career with the start of June. With tonight's start, he continued that trend, now winning his last three outings. Santana's final line was 6 innings, 5 hits, 1 run and 6 strikeouts. With the win, Johan is now 9-6 on the season, and his ERA dropped even further and now stands at 2.76.
Matt Guerrier has pitched well all season out of the bullpen, and has done everything the Twins have asked. Tonight, he pitched two scoreless innings, and with the outing now has a 1.85 ERA on the season. Ramon Ortiz got the call for the last inning, and also pitched a scoreless inning while getting one strikeout.
The offense scored two runs in the first inning, and that's all they would have needed for the victory. However, they kept adding in the fifth inning when Joe Mauer hit a grand slam to left field for his fourth homerun of the season. The Twins scored four more in the ninth inning as well, to give them eleven runs on nine hits. Some of the other key players were Morneau who went 3-5 and picked up 2 RBI, and Hunter who went 2-5 and also picked up an RBI.
