Garza Called Up
After the game today, the Twins said that they were going to make a roster move to get some more pitching help. When they said this, you'd probably suspect Carmen Cali, or maybe Jason Miller. However, the Twins made a surprising move and called up Matt Garza from AAA Rochester.
According to Joe Christensen, Garza will pitch out of the bullpen, and the Twins will then have him start one of the two games when they have a doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox on July 6. To make room on the roster, the Twins have sent backup catcher Chris Heintz back to Rochester.
Garza becomes the final "prospect" pitcher called up for the Twins this season. The Twins now have Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins, Scott Baker and Matt Garza all on the Major League squad.
One other note is that Garza had been selected as an International League All-Star, and was also chosen to pitch in the Futures Games. I'm almost certain he can't participate in the AAA All-Star Game, but I'm not sure about the Futures Game.
