Game 123: Texas Rangers
The Twins wrapped up a series win today, with a 1-0 win over the Texas Rangers. The offense was very silent, but Johan Santana had the best outing I've ever seen from him, and made me forget everything the offense didn't do. With the win, they stayed above the .500 mark for the season with a 62-61 record.
Johan Santana has had complete game shutouts. He's had games when he has had double-digit strikeout numbers. But, he's never has a game as dominant as this one, as he struck out 17 total hitters. Santana's final line was 8 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs and 17 strikeouts. He picked up the win, and is now 13-9 on the season with a 2.88 ERA.
Joe Nathan came on for the ninth with Johan sitting at 112 pitches on the game. He allowed a runner to reach second base, but struck out two hitters, and held the game for his twenty-seventh save of the season.
The offense was basically dead, and is now something like 0-18 with runners in scoring position. The one key hit, and the winning hit, was Michael Cuddyer's 12th homerun of the season that came in the second inning. Tommy Watkins was one other bright spot for me, as he collected yet another hit, and is hitting .375 since his call up.
There is no doubt, this was the best game of the season.
