Playing the Kids

For a while now, Gardenhire has been playing Punto constantly, along with Luis Rodriguez and other guys that shouldn't be playing when you're out of the playoff race. After you drop out of a race, you should look to the next season, and into the future. But that hasn't been the case. Casilla hasn't played much, same with Buscher and other guys have gotten very inconsistent playing time. But last night, Gardenhire finally put out a good lineup, and my favorite in some time.

Gardenhire's lineup looked like this:

Jason Bartlett SS
Jason Kubel LF
Joe Mauer C
Torii Hunter CF
Justin Morneau DH
Michael Cuddyer RF
Garrett Jones 1B
Brian Buscher 3B
Alexi Casilla 2B

First of all, when I say "lineup" I don't mean where the players are hitting. That, I could care less about when the season is over as far as contention goes.

Instead, I mean the players.

With this lineup, we got to get a better look at what Casilla, Buscher and Jones can do. We also got our dose of the regulars such as Hunter, Mauer, Bartlett, Morneau and Cuddyer. And then, we got to see what might be our future left fielder in Kubel.

To me, this is what will make the rest of the season worth watching. If we have to watch Punto and others play, what's the point. They won't be here in the future. But, if we get to see young guys, not only do we get pumped for next season, but in a sense, we get a season preview.

Hopefully, this won't be a one time thing, like it has been all season.
